Today Marks 100 years of Sheikh Zayed Birthday
Celebrating His Highness Sheikh Zayed 100th birthday anniversary, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the payment of one-month bonus salary to all serving and retired government employees, civilians and military, as well as beneficiaries of social welfare services.
“Zayed was the source of giving and generosity during life and he is also our stimulus to follow his legacy after his death,” President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed said.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said: “Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed and his brothers are an extension to the giving of the late Sheikh Zayed. The Zayed Centennial is a historic Emirati occasion the UAE’s people will always memories the anniversary of the late Sheikh Zayed.”
Sheikh Zayed was named after his grandfather – Zayed the Great or Zayed the First – who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1855 to 1909. In Al Ain, his father worked with the local tribesmen to construct and restore the falaj, the traditional water supply.
Sheikh Zayed paid for construction and annual running costs of hundreds of schools, orphanages, and hospitals, in dozens of developing and third world nations.
He personally adopted more than 1,000 orphans since the early 1970s. In just five years, between 1973 and 1977, he distributed over $1 billion to worthy causes.
In 2004, he passed away at the age of 86 and his burial place is found in the courtyard of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi
